September in Year Six

Year 6 has been focussed and single minded as the final weeks of the ‘exam push’ reaches it’s climax. Even those that do not intend to take the January entrance exams are responding to the class’s zeal to learn and are striding forward too.

Recently we have been studying ‘line and tone’ in art. The children first identified light sources to determine shadow and then looked at lines of perspective. This links with mathematical 3D shapes very nicely.

In the study of mountains in humanities the class appreciated how tectonic plates collide to produce volcanoes with the help of physical demonstrations involving layers of cake….mmm!

As we move from Humanities to science we will be looking at mountain animals and plants and the interconnection of the food chain in these harsh conditions.

ICT is incorporated into all aspects of the curriculum and is used as a research tool, identifying misinformation as well as true facts. In presentations we are incorporating sound and motion in into power points and hyperlinking pages and sites.

Discussions of current affairs and news items are vibrant with the children learning to deliver balanced arguments whilst listening attentively to conflicting arguments and diplomatically expressing their opinions.

We are seeking to improve personal organisational skills and endeavouring to see the children becoming more responsible for their own learning and belongings. We are making progress with this!
