September in Year One

Year One are settling in to their new class.  We have started the topic ‘Myself’ and the children are finding out and learning many interesting facts such there are 206 bones in their body!  The class is learning about the Five Senses and labelled a diagram of the eye.  Children are learning about plans and about schools in other parts of the world.

Children continue to read daily and are learning the alphabet and alphabetical order. The importance of full stops and capital letters has been introduced and first cursive writing lessons started.  In Maths children complete addition and subtraction activities and are beginning to work with numbers of ever increasing value.   We have also started length activities.

In Jewish Studies we have started to review all Hebrew letters and ensured that we are ready to embark on learning vowels and forming small Hebrew words. We have concentrated on the Chagim in the month of Tishrei and learned about the main Mitzvot connected with each one. Each week we are learning about the Parasha and focusing on a lesson which can be learned from each one. The children will usually do a craft or activity to help them remember the story or focus. We have also learned about the cycle of the moon and how we can tell the Hebrew date according to the phase of the moon.

We have made an exciting start to Year One. There is a busy year ahead with much to do and learn.
