Year Five

For children aged 9-10

Work for Year 5 is derived from the National Curriculum Schemes of Work and from our own assessment of the children. In Mathematics, the curriculum promotes the development of mathematical skills, knowledge, understanding and their application to problem solving. In addition, it tries to develop a positive attitude to the subject. Areas of study include mental calculations, fractions and Decimals, data-handling, problem solving, measures, and shape.  In Literacy, areas of study include speaking and listening skills, comprehension, composition, spelling, punctuation, handwriting, research skills, and vocabulary. The  main focus of the science programme will be knowledge, skills and understanding. The children will be guided in how to conduct rational investigations and research in order to develop their understanding of scientific concepts. History, Geography, ICT, Music, Art, PE, and PSHE all form important parts of the curriculum. In Jewish Studies, classwork focuses on Tefillah, Chumash, Hebrew reading, Parashat HaShavuah, and Middot, Mitzvot and Chagim.
