Year One

For children aged 5-6

In Year One, pupils learn to speak confidently and to listen to what others have to say. In English, they begin to read and write independently and with enthusiasm. They use language to explore their own experience and imaginary worlds. The subject focuses on handwriting, phonics, spelling and vocabulary, grammar and punctuation, reading comprehension, and writing composition. In Maths, the children begin learning mental arithmetic, time, shapes, money, data handling, and measuring. Science, history, geography and art are all covered well in the curriculum. In Jewish Studies, Year One pupils will begin to understand the significance of their Jewish heritage and lessons will contribute to their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. The Jewish Studies curriculum pays great attention to Tefillah, Hebrew Reading, Parashah, Chagim, and General Knowledge.
