Reception
For children aged 4-5
Taking care of the social and emotional needs of children is an essential part of the early learning goals in the Foundation Years. Specific attention is given to encouraging children to feel confident and able to take risks in order to discover their exciting world. Individual learning styles are accommodated in an integrated day, and school uniform is worn from this stage onwards. The Reception year integrates listening, speaking and collaborative learning around the curriculum. Children expand on embryonic pre-reading skills by word recognition and phonic approaches with handwriting taught from the earliest days. During the year, children are introduced to basic addition and subtraction processes and principles of money recognition, time and measurement are integral aspects of the syllabus. The children are introduced to the elementary principles of Science, History and Geography and take part in the creative arts including music, movement and drama. The Physical Education programme in the gym involves apparatus and floor work as well as throwing, catching and team games. Jewish Studies are extended to include further elements of Parashat HaShavua, introduction to Hebrew reading, Tefillah and Kabbalat Shabbat. They anticipate each Chag and prepare for it in different ways. Other topics covered are Calendar and Berachot, Shabbat and Kashrut.
