Year Six

For children aged 10-11

Work for Year 6 is derived from the National Curriculum Key Stage 2. The Mathematics curriculum promotes due development of mathematical skills, knowledge, understanding and their application to problem solving and tries to develop a positive attitude to the subject. In literacy, there is much emphasis on comprehension, composition handwriting, leaving lots of room for creativity.  Note-making, planning, drafting and self-correction are vital skills which are learnt, practised and reinforced, with drama and improvisation also forming points of focus. The main foci of the science programme are knowledge, skills and understanding. The children will be guided in how to conduct rational investigations and research in order to develop their understanding of scientific concepts. In History, the children build on their understanding of chronology and  factual knowledge of British and World History. The Geography syllabus aims to build on existing skills using understanding maps and building knowledge of places. ICT, PSHE, Music, Art and PE occupy important places in the curriculum. In Jewish Studies, Shaharit, or morning Tefillah, takes place every morning.  Chumash is studied four times a week, with the text used to build up a store of Chumash vocabulary and sharpen the children’s Hebrew grammar skills.  A range of commentaries is drawn upon to help deepen the children’s understanding and train them in analytical thinking.  Hebrew Reading, Parashat Hashavuah, Jewish values, Commandments and Festivals are learnt throughout the year.
