Year Three

For children aged 7-8

In Year 3, the children enter the Junior Department of the school and begin to develop the independent learning skills which they will need for the rest of their years in school and higher education. The English curriculum for Year 3 includes creative writing of both prose and poetry. Grammar, punctuation and spelling are emphasized and the children are given opportunities to read a wide range of fiction and non-fiction. Great importance is placed on the presentation of their work with regular handwriting practice and the introduction of the use of pens. In Maths, pupils are helped to develop a range of mental strategies to help them in their work.  They will be given a range of mental tests and will be able to extend their skills in both verbal and non-verbal reasoning. The learning of tables is still an important part of Maths lessons and the children also work with fractions and time. Pupils will learn Science through a combination of observation, investigation and creative thinking, using a range of scientific equipment to aid their investigations.  The curriculum for Year 3 also lets the children enjoy stimulating and in-depth study of Geography, History, IT, Arts and Crafts, Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education, Physical Education and Games, and Music. The Jewish Studies Curriculum for year 3 focuses on Tefilla, Chumash, Hebrew grammar, Hebrew reading skills, Parashat Hashavua, and Jewish Living.
