Gibraltar 2011

Last week, Year Six returned to school having spent an exciting and educational few days touring Spain and Gibraltar.

We spent a day in the ancient city of Cordoba, birthplace of the Sephardi Commentator the Rambam, where we visited the 700 year old former Synagogue.   Here, we read some Tehillim and learnt some of Rambam's commentary, adding our voices to the echoes of Jewish History.  We also visited the statue of the Rambam that stands proudly in Tiberiadus Square.

We spent a morning both on and in the Rock of Gibraltar where we met with the ever-popular Barbary apes that reside on the Rock.  We explored the Second World War Tunnels which linked to our school history project on the Second World War, and we were stunned by the breath-taking St Michael's Cave, adorned with stalagmites and stalactites.  We also visited the Old Jewish Cemetery on the Rock, where we learned about some of the former Rabbis of Gibraltar.

A beautiful Shabbat was spent in Gibraltar, where we received an exceptionally warm welcome from the wonderfully hospitable community there.  A delicious Shabbat dinner was eaten with Family Levy, grandparents of Zevi.

On a lighter note, we enjoyed a trip on the Dolphin Safari where we were entertained by the large number of dolphins that swam freely alongside the boat.  The last evening was spent at the Tivoli Theme Park where we overcame our fear to ride the scariest rides, bump the bumpiest cars and roll around on the roller coaster.

We returned to school having enjoyed a fantastic week together and having grown in responsibility, group spirit and independence.
